Artist's Description

The Type 16 MCV is the latest combat vehicle of the JGSDF, the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.
under examination at the Ministry of Defense’s Technology Research Headquarters, it was scheduled in FY2008. It was designed for light eight and fast deployment, but able to engage MBTs thanks to its heavy gun and state-of-the-art optics. Speed was its overall protection, as well as traditional and IR smoke dischargers. Design was assumed by TRDI (Technical Research & Development Institute) and production by Mitsubishi. The MCV was scheduled by the MOD FY2016, for 36 vehicle entering service with the 8th Division (Kumamoto) and 14th Brigade (Zentsūji) in order to be converted as rapid reaction forces. Total production as planned should be around 200, 300 for the original procurement. One inspiration for this vehicle was the successful Italian Centauro wheeled tank. The MCV has been develeoped for conventional incursions but also counter-insurgency and to deal with asymmetrical attacks in urban areas. It could be carried by a Kawasaki C-2, but lacks a true undercarriage IED protection. The 105 mm gun developed by Japan Steel Works could fire APFSDS, HE and HEAT rounds. It is manually loaded. There is no air conditioning. Protection on the frontal arc is assured against 20 to 30 mm rounds, while the sides using modular armor are protected against 12.7 mm rounds. Secondary armament incluides a Browning M2HB cal.50 and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. Overall weight: 26t. Dimensions 8.45m x 2.98m x 2.87m, top speed 100kph. The PCV is propelled by Water cooled 4-stroke 4 cylinder diesel 570ps/2,100rpm.
