Artist's Description

Born on July 23rd, 1919, in Texas, Lafayette Green Pool joined the army as a tanker, 3rd Armored Division deployed in France in June 1944. He soldiered on until September 1944 (83 days), loosing 3 Sherman tanks during his time. Each of them used to be named “IN THE MOOD” and a numeral. But in all, Poole destroyed in the meantime no less than 250 tanks, self-propelled guns and other armoured vehicles, and in particular12 Tiger Is and Panthers. This made him the all-time American tank ace of the second world war. He and his crew faced no less than 21 tank battles and ended usually in the vanguard. This was due both of his insistance and the recoignition of his amazing skills. His first Sherman was destroyed by a Panzerfaust while the second was hit by a friendly fire from a P-38. However he met his fate in the third Sherman, an M4A1W of the late type with a cannon muzzle. Pool survived and in his memoirs, vividly remembered this 15th of September. He was taking part in the liberation of the area around Mons, tank battles around Namur, and the capture of Liege, when his platoon was ambushed by a German Panther, which first shot penetrated his Sherman and possibly another hit the ammo rack sending the crew hurtling out of the tank. They survived but Pool left his leg in this fight, ending his fighting career. He would receive the Distinguished Service Cross, Legion of Merit, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Belgian Fourragère and Légion d’honneur. Much later in his life after many odd jobs and a return in the army as intructor, he became a preacher and passed out in May 30, 1991.
