A Panzer IV Ausf.C, 8th Korps, IInd Abteilung, 35th Panzer Regiment, 4th Panzerdivision – France, May-June 1940. The Ausf.C was the third of a very early version, comprising four models acting as pre-series. The Ausf A was produced to only 35 units by 1936 for evaluations. The next Ausf.B, was given a modified commander cupola, and a new Maybach HL 120TR engine rated for 300 hp, as well as a new SSG75 transmission. Top speed was increased to 39 km/h (27 mph), and armor was raised to 30 mm (1.18 in) on the frontal glacis, and 15 mm (0.59 in) on the sides. The hull machine-gun received a new port. The serie ran for 42 unit. On the Ausf. C protection was increased to 30 mm (1.18 in) around the turret. At18.15 tons this early Panzer IV was still light. 40 were delivered until 1938, and the apparition of the new Maybach HL 120TRM was fitted on the next 100 delivered. The next Ausf.D or “Dora” had a hull machine gun, an external gun mantlet and 20 mm (0.79 in) side armor. It was produced to about 243 machines, operational in early 1940.
