Artist's Description

A “half galley” or Turkish Galician of the sixteenth century. Heir to Mediterranean pirate ships, short and manageable, made for raids from islands as in Aegean, they were instrumental in the progressive domination of the Mediterranean by the Ottomans. Well suited to privateers, they were fast enough to catch any cargo ship of the time while being able to easily left carracks and even Venetian and Genoese galleys with their speed thanks to the delicacy of their lines and lightweight construction. Reproducing the tactics of the ancient “Lembi”, they hampered the maneuvers and surpassed by the number of heavy Christian ships in battles ruled as in Lepanto in 1571.
