An Ottoman Admiral galley or “Bastard of the Sultan”: This type of ship with two or even three masts could reach 65 meters long and ten wide with nearly 7 men per bench and 36 oars, an empty space used for cooking (the “fougon”) is a total of 491 rowers, 300 infantrymen and about thirty sailors and officers. The majority of Ottoman galleys were more reasonable, typically 42-43 meters for 25 oars per board handled by 5 rower vogues. (Source: Kadirga’s Miniature). There were also light race galleys, the 34-meter Kalyata, and the low-draft Firkate (51 rowers) able to navigate the rivers.
