Artist's Description

Galley of the Order of Malta, typical of the contemporary years of Lepanto. The rostrum served only as a “bridge” in the event of a collision… She possessed oars manned by five men, “scaloccio” the galleys admirals up to eight. The Maltese galleys had between 26 to 30 banks (thus up to 60 oars), 260-300 rowers and almost as many troops, servants of culverins and ballistae who completed the 6 heavy parts (from 6 to 48 pounds) abreast. The bulk of the arquebusiers also took their place on the forecastle. (Source: Model of the Museum of Valletta)
