Artist's Description

The “Great Carrack” of Malta’s knights was a famous ship of the early XVIth century, which participated in the battle of 1565 against Soliman II’s massive Turkish fleet of 160 galleys. Probably the biggest ship afloat worldwide at that stage, it had seven decks, a forge and armoury, cereal mills, and drinking water tanks. Not only that, but its hull had triple thickness wooden walls, probably with extra-had inserts like teck, and was impervious to enemy fire. Crew was 300.
