This piece of old farm equipment is lying abandoned in a corner of a field in Thelwall in Warrington, close to the towpath of the Bridgewater Canal. It’s a Bamford Air Action Rake and was probably used for harrowing the fields in the age of Horse Power.

According to Wikipedia, Bamfords International Farm Machinery was one of the country’s major agricultural equipment suppliers, famous for its balers, rakes, hay turners, hay Wufflers, Mangold cutters, and standing engines, which were exported all over the world. The company eventually ceased trading in 1986.

One family member, Joseph Cyril Bamford left the family firm and set up on his own. He named the company after his initials and painted all his machines bright yellow. Modern JCB’s seem a long way from this.
