Absit Invidia Moment

We had long ago faced the purple and saluted…
your bold clear female courage
my quiet bellow
Morituri te salutant!
the crowd chanted under the piebald awning
Neca eum!
Neca eius!
their thunder blended into stony echo across the blooded sand
came the sound of quiet flapping
velarium cast jagged shadows down steep seats
branding searing oculum of afternoon far across the floor
you stripped down hasta, laculum, galerus, manica
I, helmet, gladius, manica, pugnum
the crowd silenced
peacocks cried in boxes near the emperor’s fist
betrayed of carnage the crowd tumulted
Accipe viscera!
we stripped our wide belts and subligacula
breathing hard spitting blood
our wounds deep, still we stood
sweating balancing our sandals in the shifting crunch
we felt lions roar in the hypogeum below
Nos sunt mortuus, I said
Vite incipit!, were you words
you put your salty lips on mine.
