Artist's Description

Yorktown National Cemetery contains 2,204 burials of which 1,436 are unknown. The cemetery was established in 1866 by combining severval cemeteries within a 50 mile radius and is made up of mainly Union soldiers from the Civil War, but there are 10 Confederate soldiers buried here. The cemetery is located adjacent to the Yorktown battle fields where the British Army surrendered to General Washington’s combined American and French Army in 1781.
