SHE KNEW WHAT WAS COMING.

She knew what was coming,
She’d known it before:
The slam of a door,
The rattle of frames,

The curses, the names
Of dames he’d bedded
Or buggered or maybe both;
She knew what was coming,

She’d known it before:
The punch to the jaw,
The swollen lip,
The gooey dribble drip,

The blackened eyes,
The damned lies;
She knew what was coming,
She’d known it before:

The bellowing words,
The spitting of phlegm,
The clenched fit,
The red mist;

She knew what was coming,
She’d known it before:
The greying ceiling,
Her on the floor,

The boot in the ribs,
The flowing fibs,
The oh-I’m-sorrys
Ever flowing;

Never knowing
Which way to turn;
She knew what was coming,
She’d known it before:

Him with his jokes,
His pokes in the side,
The dark side
He’d never hide,

All there for her to see,
To know, always on show;
She knew what was coming,
She’d known it before:

The make up cuddles,
The kisses, the flowers,
The make love hours,
The lying in bed,

The cigarette smoke,
The life long joke;
She and him
And the battle dim,

The drugs and booze,
Not wanting to lose,
She’d known it before,
She knew what was coming:

The death flies buzzing,
The humming of songs,
The righting of wrongs,
He dead, split head,

Broken neck, what the heck,
He had it coming,
She’d known it before,
He came in the door

With his latch-key spinning
And his sick face grinning,
Never any more,
Never any more.

SHE KNEW WHAT WAS COMING.
