Artist's Description

Belvue Park is part of The Northolt and Greenford Countryside Park, the biggest park to be built in London in the last 100 years. Though a slightly too-pretty landscape it is a painting of history that begins in the Iron Age. (about 700 BC to 43 AD). I suppose it is easiest to just say it was long, long ago when over on that hill there would have been a settlement of large round houses keeping their bottoms dry from the swampy clay ground down where we are standing. There are only fragments of pottery and flint stones left. These few remains were found when archeologists were excavating a medieval manor house that stood just to the right and a little further back from the small 1290 Saint Mary the Virgin church you see on the rise.
