The pitaya or dragon fruit, is the fruit of several cactus species, especially of the genus Hylocereus. Originating from South America is now cultivated in Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia. They are also found in Taiwan, Israel, and southern China.
The gragonfruit only flowers at night, they are large white flowers that are often called Moonflower or Queen of the Night.
Three common types, all with leathery, slightly leafy skin:
Hylocereus undatus, white flesh with pink skin
Hylocereus polyrhizus, red flesh with pink skin
Selenicereus megalanthus, white flesh with yellow skin
The flesh is eaten raw, is mildly sweet and very low in calories.
The flavour is likened to the kiwifruit.
The fruit may be converted into juice and the flowers can be eaten or steeped as tea.
Sesame seed-sized seeds are embedded throughout the flesh. Although the tiny pitaya seeds are eaten with the flesh, the seeds are indigestible.
The red flesh variety is popular in Malaysia and is to be rich in antioxidants.
I hope this answers your question. The variety in my photo I can buy here in Canada with no problem and it’s really good.
