To have lost a loved one once before

To have lost a loved one once before,
To feel the ache,
To face the pain,

Falling like a rain drop,
Only to land in a field a roses,
Pricked by a bed of thorns,

And to smile as someone tells you
That you’ll be ok,
That time heals all wounds,
That there’s plenty of other fish in the sea.

To know that everyone means well,
But to dwell in the hurt that swells up inside you,
Slowly,
Slowly
Slowly,
Until you gasp for air,

Drowning in this flood of only your own emotions,
Trying to swim,
Reaching,
Striving,
Calling out for help.

Hearing nothing.

To put your feet down,
One foot at a time
And to learn that you’re only knee deep.

To take that first step… on your own
Dare to move forward
Further
Further.

Soon you’re running,
Running as fast as you can,
The voices behind you,
Suddenly loud,
Calling to you,
Begging you to stop,
To slow down.

They grow dim.
Dimmer,
Then nothing.
And as you fall to your knees,
Wondering how you got there,
Wondering where those voices were,
When you called to them for help.

Then you hear it,
There is a voice,
many voices,
Calling to you,
You look up,
You’re surrounded by people.
And you’re strong.

How did you get here you wonder.
To have crawled though a year in slow motion,
And then to fly through the next in fast.

And now…
What next?
Move on?
As before?
Yes.

Life… gives you no other choice.

But to live it without that loved one?
Possible?
Yes.
The same?
Never.

The scars from old wounds remain.
They’ll always remain.
A reminder of what was.
A reminder of what could be.

A love.
A love lost.

To have lost a loved one once before
