Artist's Description

Just wide enough to fit a man’s shoulders, not tall enough to stand upright, and just long enough for a man to lie on the floor outstretched – many a convict would have spent time in one of these, in complete darkness, inside the cold, damp sandstone and brickwork vault they had been forced to build first.

Tasmania was once also known as the ‘prison island’, among other bywords given to the Apple Isle by the convicts.

It is difficult to imagine the hardship and suffering the poor souls had to endure.
