Artist's Description

What a contrast: the remnants of inhumane existence in front of such splendid vistas!

On the way to Lime Bay, where the track to Lagoon Beach begins, one passes the ‘Coal Mines’. A world heritage site today, the Coal Mines was established as a much-needed local source of coal, but also as a place of punishment for the worst class of convicts. http://portarthur.org.au/heritage/heritage-valu...

This image was taken in May 2002, with a Pentax SLR, 135 film. It was then scanned on Canon Pixma MP630 scanner; to remedy overly noisy grain, the scan received a light crosshatch filter before it was retouched in Aperture and Corel Painter on iMac.
