Some things are so delicate that bold colours and bold shapes would overshadow them; the cornflower is just such a thing. The cornflower is one of my favourite flowers, not the least because it is blue, I have an affinity with the colour blue, and blue flowers. This cornflower motif with bees requires a delicate treatment. The soft blue dots around a cornfield, paired with the red dots of the poppies and the white ox-eye daisy, has always seemed to me like the vista of an enchanted land; I've tried to convey that 'enchantment' in this design with a whispy background of a hazy cornflower 'carpet', and an armful of cornflowers in the centre. Bees are important to life on the planet, and that's why the bee appears in many of my floral designs. Cornflowers with Bees takes me back many decades, to when the wheat was still harvested with horse-drawn implements.
