MUSINGS ON THE ARTS

The artist is both revered and ignored in society. As artists, we receive acclaim both personal and social. However, it is short lived and very short sighted by those who dole out the momentary affections for art. Unless one has been well received in a cash or political manner most attention is but a dribble. When I say cash or political I am meaning someone who is patronizing of the chosen artist. We see throughout history the artist who is ignored and even reviled during their lifetime, only to be hoisted upon high and acclaimed once they are dead. This is both a short sighted variance of the rich and the poor. For, true appreciation comes in a consistent appreciation of the arts throughout one’s life. Support of the arts is not achieved by a mere liking of one piece or one artist over the other because they are acclaimed. Support must be allowed to flow because one’s personal soul is struck in the love or curiosity or shock of a work. In modern society man is told what he should like by galleries and critics when in reality the only true meaning in a piece is the personal interactions between the artists work and the one experiencing the piece. Too many individuals are made to feel embarrassed by their reactions if they are not readily acclaimed publicly. However it is my stance that all art is subjective to the individual and his soul’s interaction. The shame and embarrassment and even mysticism surrounding art must be removed for all art to be readily acceptable to the public and the individual must learn to listen to their own interiors as to what the piece of art means to them. And finally the individual must be readily willing and able to purchase a piece and display it in their living areas. So much flowery nonsense, because it is the accepted norm is not true appreciation of the arts.
