Adventurous Disappointments

She stared at the blindingly white computer screen, crossed and uncrossed her feet, allowed her mind to turn numb.
She closed her eyes. She stepped onto a soft layer of baby grass, her bare feet tickled by tiny moths’ feathered wings. She reached out and touched a man’s jaw, traced her fingers around his fine lips and across his muscled chest, felt his heart’s steady beat. She took another step and heard the rush of cars hurry past her, honking and swearing and blasting music of all kinds. She was pushed by the passing bodies, all in a haste, all too busy to excuse themselves, some carrying shopping bags, some carrying cardboard signs, some carrying cameras, all carrying a heavy load of thoughts. She opened her mouth and tasted the salt and water in the heavy air; she sniffed at the scents of sea and sunscreen. She reached out and her finger was grasped tightly by a hand much smaller than her own, a hand that hadn’t touched much more than a breast and a blanket. She heard the newborn babe’s sniffles and cries, the baby’s laughter and senseless noises. She took a step and ran straight into a large body, a body who immediately wrapped his arms around her and squeezed. She smelled laundry detergent and cookies, and she nuzzled her face into a cotton-covered shoulder. She lifted her face up after what seemed like an hour, and was greeted by the brightest sunshine she could imagine, the most beautiful music ever created, the juiciest, most delicious fruit ever grown, the softest object known to the universe, and the grandest joy welling up in her heart. She tried to hang on to every sensation, she clung to the feelings tighter than a closed rose bud, but she couldn’t hold on tight enough.
She opened her eyes. She closed her eyes. She opened her eyes. She stared at the blindingly white computer screen, clasped and unclasped her hands. She looked around her, noted the hollow sound of her heartbeat, of her breaths.
