Walls

There’s bottom lines and basic truth
in much of life’s rich offerings.

Some go down easy enough,
while others,
not so much.

In this dark room
in this big bed
ten thousand miles
from her
there at arm’s reach

there’s two walls,
built with karma
and the hands
of them
no longer here.

One stands for gruesome
foolish terrifying fear
of manifested love,

the other
guards its kingdom
with arrows of longing
and spears of sad and lonely guilt.

Though I can see her
up in the ramparts,
sometimes looking out,

it is as if
that shadow
is as far away
as the moon.

And for me
each new bout
of fairy tale tragic ending

shrinks me smaller
then before

until soon
I may
no longer be
at all.
