Artist's Description

Kilauea Volcano has been erupting since 1984, but the lava vent is located at Pu’u O’o, quite some distance from Kilauea Caldera which has been fairly quiet. However, after decades of inactivity, on March 19, 2008, a gas vent exploded into existence in Halemaumau Crater in Kilauea Caldera, the first explosive eruption there since 1924 as well as the first lava eruption in the crater since 1982.

You can see yellow traces of sulfur around the vent. Even recently, it was possible to see the river of lava several meters below the opening of the vent. It ejects as much as 15,000 tons of sulfur dioxide a day into the air.
