Artist's Description

In Vedic times mention has been made of many terms with great significance. Shiva and Shakti or Self and Maya are some very important terms. Self is called Purush and everything that is not self is Prakriti. They are inseparable. Prakriti is existing because there is Purush. Prakriti is perishable, Purush is not.

Here in this work, this concept is shown symbolically. A lady figure is Maya, who is a performer , make inert movable and the king at the bottom right corner is representing Purush symbolically by a king, who is admiring the performance of Maya or prakriti , is drawn towards it ,but is still maintaining a position as an observer.

There is a parallel thought of three type of nature of a human being…Satvic,Rajsic and Tamsik . Tamsic is the lowest nature , which sustain by maintaining never ending desires for perishable things in life and work for it and demand for it all thru its life. This is depicted by woman figure performing seductively before a King..who is the provider but not attached to it…the perishables. While there with joys that are perishable, he is all the time seeking to go to the next stage, that is Satvic…a stage closest to divine type existence, sustained by just Ananda ( blisfulness) . So what we see in this image from one perspective, is existence of Rajsic and Tamsic .

Red is the color of passion and blue is the color of Tamsic nature. This is the stage prior to achievement of a higher stage of Satvic.
