This is a sketch of April, a beautiful horse I agreed to undertake in late October 2009.
I normally love to sketch strong contrasts in animals (like in the Collie, Ballantines, Max and Moss) but this horse had such a beautiful light chestnut tan coat and very fine blonde mane, I had to rest my favourite softer pencils, (2B, and 4B’s leads) and concentrate on the higher harder leads (F, H3, H4, H7, H8 and H10 leads) to do justice to that beautiful chestnut coat she was wearing.
Her face, being a very stark white, was devoid of much texture, so I ended up unclosing the top of the head and nose with the slightest shading I could manage, strengthening under her mouth, mind you the harness I sketched in seemed to keep this stark white face contained.
Most of the hours I spent on the pencil work, were on the neck and cheeks, with only a few minutes spent on the her mane which was so fine and delicate, it really didn’t need too much pencil work.
