Catherine Walker- Self Taught Artist

Born in the Top end of Australia – Darwin, in the Northern Territory then living in a town called “Batchelor” , 60 miles south of Darwin, for the first 7 years of my life .
I was lucky enough to have the “bush” as my playground and the sun always giving it’s warmth as a child growing up. This fleeting “bush lifestyle” gave me a definite respect for the land ,it’s creatures ,it’s inhabitants and also gave me a real sense of curiousity for all things pertaining to nature and creation in general.
********Watching some indigenous artists painting on our lounge room wall as a youngster was really awe inspiring for a child and I believe this gave me my first insights into the magic of art ! ..so I say Thankyou to those Aboriginal men, and my
wonderful father for asking them to do art on our walls !
kangaroos, snakes, turtles and other amazing animals from the bush of the northern territory magically emerged on a blank wall as those talented and spiritual Aboriginal men drew happily but intently with some texta colours..it was sheer magic and would have inspired any child who saw it…I must have been blessed from an early age to have witnessed such a thing ! .

I had a beautiful ,natural, free, bush lifestyle..even if it was only for a short time in my life..I can remember a lot of the sights ,the sounds and the smells of the australian tropical bushlands..and those wonderful memories will stay with me forever.

I have lived in Dandenong Victoria Australia ..for the past 41 years and I paint on canvas, wood, ceramics , furniture.. anything that I can find on hard rubbish that would be suitable.. anything that would hold some paint
I’ve been in a small number of group exhibitions both in melbourne and sydney and have won some minor encouragement and honourable mention awards when I was in my 20’s
I don’t enter any art competitions or have exhibitions these days…it’s been a bit difficult for me to paint at all over these past 22 years due to some personal family traumas and stresses – All is all going well now and everything including my painting continues to get better and better

I have a very supportive family though where my art is concerned…they keep me in paints and canvas when I don’t have any and have become avid collectors of my work …..Family is the best !

I’ve had just one solo exhibition ,in a place called “The old cheese factory” my exhibition was in the 1990’s here in victoria ..It was a gorgeous old world looking building made of wood and stone and with a gorgeous ambience it was all very enjoyable… maybe it didn’t give me the monetary gain that I needed and wanted but emotionally it was very exciting.. I was proud of my efforts to get the exhibition together though I had help from many wonderful family. and friends..The exhibition was a success to me in lots of ways ,and I’d like to have another one soon
if I can find another public or private gallery to have an exhibition. Maybe the Walker street gallery in Dandenong would be a good place to start .

I paint the visions/ideas in my mind, they can come to me at any time.. I usually paint entirely from my imagination, and rarely paint in any other way , though occasionally, I might go outside and try to paint what I see in the garden or try to paint a scene that has impressed me from a camping trip or a bush walk … to me,nature is the most inspiring thing and the only place where I find true peace in this strange world. .

I have many different styles of painting and use many different paints and techniques from pencil and ink to charcoal, oils and acrylics ..house paint is great to use also
my favourite paint though is matisse or Atelier Acrylic ( when I can afford to buy them)because of their brilliant colours and quick drying time..enabling my thoughts or visions to be trapped on the canvas at lightening speed ..I thank our oldest sister Gemma for buying me these beautiful paints over the years
I’ve been told that I have great originality and a diverse variation in style…well thankyou, I find no need to copy any ones work, as I too many paintings that want to be painted from my own mind
A profound influence on my wanting to do Art was when I was at high school I was 14 -15 years of age .. I found a magic book in our school library . it was called "Masters of the japanese print " I will put the auothors name here tomorrow …I was totally enthralled, at how the old japanese masters painted such perfect black lines around each subject in their painting and although I never perfected the art myself .I
I still love the look of black lines around my characters and subjects in a painting…Thankyou to those masters for their inspiration and skill.
now at 60 years old , I have been painting on and off for over 40 years ..My latest batch of paintings..and my newest sessions have revealed some interesting images of angelic or spititual beings and humans ,plus paintings of the earth and how it’s beauty can heal us .

I have many Interests -reading, especially a certain book called “A course in Miracles” which has helped and inspired me for more than 18 years now .. I also like to read and study about manifesting our desires at a quicker rate.

I love fossiking for shells and old bits of junk that many people would think of as rubbish , I also like to " treasure hunt".. and loved to go gold panning at “Eldorado” victoria in the beechworth area , A beautiful environment to be at one with nature.

I am extremely interested in the UFO phenomenon and after seeing a strange light in the sky in 1993.. where 7 of us witnessed the most amazing orange orb/ light / craft that was like nothing you have ever seen on earth !this set the stage for an all consuming hobby… and I watch the skies a lot these days.

I painted some UFO’s and alien type creatures after witnessing this strange light
..I cannot fully comprehend that night, as it was so incredible but I can say this..strange things DID HAPPEN after seeing that light.

I hope to make a living from what I do best and that is painting
sometimes the artist is not recognized as offering a valuable commodity to society.. and we are often thought of as either bad, mad or both !

This attitude is quite wrong . Artists are pretty straight talking people ..they are well grounded for the most part and are valuable contributers to “Life” In the world.. a lot of us are looked upon as slightly strange and eccentric ..I think it’s because Artists are so sensitive about many things in this world that others would not be sensitive about… and Artists all rather " intuitive" , that makes us odd because spirit is being lost in this world . Artists are mysterious, loving, curious and kind the world needs Artists more than ever. Artists have good hearts.. to me, Artists are the real Humans…the world is too cruel at present ..but we can all make Art to help to change it !

I think we should pat ourselves on the back from time to time because we add so much interest and beauty to this world even if it often goes unrecognized.

thanks for listening to me ramble..but painting is the only thing that I do well in this world..so I feel that I have a right to crow about that one achievement.

I would just like to say that If you see my original art on other sites and the prices are higher than on this site, this is due to the very high commissions that some art sites charge, so I have to put some of my prices up on those particular works..I will still have to charge postage and packaging on my red bubble prices for my original paintings…thanks for your understanding.
