From a flying bed stead came this elegant jet , proven in action in the Falklands and as yet unsurpassed . I recently met a design engineer who was present at the test bed flights , the story was quite frightening .“J is for JUMP JET”
harrier jet jump off rolls royce take vertical
I’m old enough to remember photos in the newspapers of the flying bedstead “flying” and tethered so it wouldn’t go to high. Good shot by the why. Cheers Neil
The Hawker Harrier was borne out of the ‘Flying Bedstead’, which was developed at Hucknall aerodrome, where Rolls Royce were testing the engines that powered this aircraft (The Pegasus engine). There is still a pub in Hucknall, Notts, called ‘The Flying Bedstead’ (not a million miles from where I live).Nice capture.
this is a great photo, i love aircraft and the Harrier is one of my favourites.
