Artist's Description

Old St Boniface Church is in the lovely old Seaside village of Bonchurch on the Isle of Wight. It was built by the Monks of Lyra Abbey in Normandy in 1070, on the site of a much older saxon church. Algernon Charles Swinburne, the famous victorian poet, lived close by at East Dene, with his parents Admiral Sir Charles and Lady Jane Swinburne, and he was Baptised here in 1837. In the summer of 1849, Charles Dickens rented Winterbourne, a large house a short distance away, and within sight of this church, where he wrote some chapters of his book David Copperfield, no doubt he worshipped at this church during his time here.
