Artist's Description

This photograph was taken at Lamanai on the mainland of Belize roughly half way between the border with Guatamala and the Mesquito coast. Lamanai sits on the banks of the New River (or the river of strangest faces as the Mayans had named it). Lamanai was an important city and quite an urban center between 1000 – 1500 BC with a population of nearly 60,000. This particular picture is of a degrading mask that was uncovered during the excavation of the Mayan Temple known only as N9-56. I tried to capture this picture with detail and the same lighting that appeared at the site.
