Artist's Description

Le Marais is the Jewish Quarter of Paris. When I was there last, I was fortunate to sample and indulge in some delicious kosher food. The delicious freshly baked pastries and cakes are out of this world! The bookshops and Synagogue are also very interesting features. It is a humming buzzing place to be! Quite a lot of *Hasidic Jews are seen in the streets on Chabbat (Sabbath). A concentrated cultural wonder, in this amazing city, Paris.

  • Hasidism * (also Chasidism), an influential mystical Jewish movement founded in Poland in the 18th century in reaction to the rigid acedemicism of rabbinical Judaism. The movement, which emphasized the importance of religious enthusiasm rather than learning, had a strong popular following; it was inspired by Israel ben Eliezer (c.1700-60), called Baal-Shem-Tov (Heb.,=master of the good name) because of his reputation as a miraculous healer. Denounced in 1781 as heretical, the movement declined sharply in the 19th century, but fundamentalist communities developed from it and Hasidism is still a force in Jewish life, particularly in Israel and New York.
