Artist's Description

A planted pine plantation and wild phlox by the side of the road in rural Levy County, Florida.

You see a lot of planted pines in this area for a couple of reasons. One is, the tax collector gives you an agricultural exemption to your taxes if you have more than a certain amount of acres planted in pines. Another reason is that the pines drop pine straw constantly and there’s a huge market for pine straw for horticultural and landscaping uses so owners of pine plantations get a steady income from that. Finally when the trees are harvested, that’s a big pay-off, but most plantation owners use some of the money to plant new babies to grow for the next 15-20 years until the next harvest.

It’s really very peaceful to be driving along the county roads and seeing row after row of planted pines, in fact it can be mesmerizing if you’re not careful. The phlox (wildflowers) are everywhere in spring, especially along the sides of the county roads, which are not mowed in most cases so people can enjoy the riot of color for a month or two.
