Wandering the halls of Kilmainham Gaol, one can feel the presence of those who spent time behind the walls of this infamous and horrid prison. This is the largest unoccupied prison in Europe, perhaps in the entire world. It held behind its walls inmates who were accused of stealing as little as a turnip or a blade of grass during the Famine years. Children died in this prison, buried in a plot next to the ‘playground’, where the living children prisoners were allowed to ‘exercise’, walking heal to toe, heads to their chests, reciting their ‘crimes’ to themselves. And we call ourselves ‘human’…..
