Artist's Description

On a cool Octobers day in 2005, we visited Monasterboice. There was a funeral there on that day for a young man who had been killed on one of the narrow, winding roads in the County. We waited respectfully until the service was over before we entered the grounds of this amazing site. One of the finest High Crosses in Ireland is to be found here, Muiredach’s Cross, which inherited its name from the carvings of two cats at the West base, intertwined with the inscription which invokes prayer for the one who commissioned the work on the cross. Some scholars have speculated the person to be Muiredach mac Domhnaill, who was Abbot for the monastery, and who died in the late ninth century.
