Artist's Description

Say hello to Lina.
Lina is a robot based on the aroma chemical Linalool that is found in over 200 flowering plant species, everything from sweet orange blossoms to lavender and cannabis!

Linalool is a colorless natural occurring, terpene alcohol with a distinct scent- depending on which way you smell linalool. Linalool is an isomeric molecule which means it has the same molecular chemistry but can bond in a slightly different way.

In the 3 dimensional space we live in, we encounter two different versions of this same chemical and our scent receptors can tell the difference in the bonded configuration. These molecules are actually a mirror image of one another. You can envision this by looking at your two hands. Your hands are identical and a perfect mirror image of each other yet each one is configured in the opposite way. The same goes for the two versions of linalool. The scent varies depending on if you smell them together, separately or in various combinations with other aroma chemicals. This is part of what makes scent chemistry and things like the science of perfumery so interesting with so much room for variation. Linalool is a popular chemical used in a lot of manufactured perfumes and it occurs naturally in many plants that are familiar to us so it has a recognizable and pleasing scent to many people when mixed in the right amounts.

(S)-(+)-linalool is usually considered the sweeter scent associated with coriander and orange while®-(-)- linalool is strongly associated with woodsy smells and lavender. Mmmmmm. I love me some lavender!

Regardless of which way your nose encounters linalool, one thing is for certain, it is an aroma chemical associated with a LOT of different flowers. And that is great for this week’s robot name Lina.

Lina had been originally programmed with what seemed like a very simple prime objective. To bring people flowers to make them happy. What Lina found out early on was that objective often failed- Lina could deliver flowers no problem- but not all smells pleased all people. Some even hated smells and left with headaches! This was not good for a robot programed to make humans happy. Therefore, Lina had to be updated over the years and has now acquired the the ability to increase or decrease a combination of aroma chemicals (primarily that of linalool) that already exist in the posies that Lina presents to the people and animals that Lina meets. Oh and don’t worry, Lina is sure to only provide edible and tasty flowers to her animal friends! For some customers Lina turns the sweet scents up high and for some who are sensitive to smell, Lina dials the scent down all together.

Lina’s non-passionate and purely data-driven obsession with providing tiny bits of sometimes smelly nature to customers at the Feel Good Bar and Grill on the moon Enceladus has made Lina a customer favorite. Scent is closely linked to memory in the brains of humans and Lina can often pick just the perfect smell to bring you back to that peaceful day you spent sitting in a human-made meadow on Mars with your sweetheart or back at the barn on earth when you first learned what a sweat pea was. Who wouldn’t love a bit of good ol’ fashion nature after being stuck in a space ship for months! Lina totally gets those feels- and is ready to greet you on the moon Enceladus!
