Artist's Description

When a disaster strikes people are eager to show their hand in a loving way. They collect funds, donate clothing, food and temporary shelters. They mobilize to rescue all who can be, that includes me. But six months down the line who will remain to help stabilize individuals?

The trees have been moved from the streets, rubble has been taken by heavy machinery and glass has been swept away. But after the cameras are gone, after commercialism shows its hand for personal interest and when the next big story comes along, who will stay behind for the rescue efforts of the mind?

When I painted this piece I wasn’t necessarily thinking about natural disasters such as a hurricane, tsunami or an earthquake. I was thinking of the disasters of the mind. I was thinking about events that leave us feeling crippled and isolated. I was thinking of the few who will come in and stay for the long haul to help heal emotional wounds.
