Fireflies

A sudden shock – of fireflies in the night.
No lamp, no neon light, no liquid
crystal screen illuminates
the lane, yet in
the darkest shades – strange flares
of flying light! Kids turn and turn amazed,
catch as catch can electric eyes
that zag the dark, blink
off and on from
switches
out of hand and sight;
a glitzy morse whose flares flit by
like quartz crystals in grim mines or the bite
of crackers on Guy Fawkes night.
Intent on some mysterious
rite these flyers split
the dark,
unknowing they excite
old tales behind our minds: of tygers
burning bright and Gollum’s avid eyes, a track
of pebbles in moonlight, spit, cross
my heart and hope to die,
wishes cast down
wells,
spells glittering in caves,
minnows silvering a brook, fairy wands
that point the way, waves’ phosphoroscent
gleams, magic with a ‘k’, ships
tossed on gulping seas,
star tic behind a
wind-rocked
tree…

Then
kids are kids that whoop and
chase, shadows fireworked in the dark,
flickering in and out of sight, their
tangled hair a mesh
of sparks.

A jam-
jar flares with light
beside the sleeping heads. I shake
the jar into the night, before
the magic
dies.
