Artist's Description

Young Mountain Gorilla, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, Gorilla Beringei Beringei

The facts:
There are roughly 700 mountain gorillas remaining on Earth, and nearly half live in the forests of the Virunga mountains in central Africa. These gorillas live on the green, volcanic slopes of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—areas that have seen much human violence from which the gorillas have not escaped unscathed.

The feelings
One of the most memorable experiences of my life, being close to this wonderful animal (and the rest of his family), sharing an hour with him, incredibly emotional and worth every inch of the long climb and walk. And the good news is that this is not the only youngster safe in the Virungas.

Status
The mountain gorilla is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
