This 6X7 bull elk was taken in the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. A 6×6 elk is called a Royal. A 7×7 is called an Imperial, and an 8×8 is called a monarch, so I guess he’s almost a Imperial. These magnificent creatures was once extinct in the eastern US. The last known “Eastern Elk” was killed in 1877 and has become extinct . The experimental release of elk into Great Smoky Mountains National Park began in February, 2001 with the importation of 25 elk from the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. They now can be seen at various places on the NC side of the Smokies. Population has reached 140 and are of the species " Rocky Mountain Elk".
