Beware of the dark

“What is it you
Most value?” asked
The Jackal…
Try as I might
No answer would form.
His eyes turned red
His mirth
Rang forth
And he roared;
“Are you clueless?”
And indeed it seemed
That I was…
On the baking sands
He languidly stretched
Sinking his claws
Into my heart…
So pathetic was I
He set forth;
With the flick
Of his tail,
Me
From his visage…
I shuddered and
Hand over foot crept away
Head down
My ears ringing
With his disdain
Shame blazing a trail
In my wake….
On a rocky outcrop
That was my
Very own precipice
I sat to thinking.
It seemed that day followed night
A raging thirst
And all manner of troubles beset me
When finally I was too tired
To care
A mirage sprang up
My Beloved
My child
My siblings
My home
My body
All swam by
A fine pinprick of light began
And with it
The answer came;
“I would not give up
My mind!”
Fetid breath barked in my face
“Sucked in Dearie
For this is just
What I’ll take!”
And into the abyss
I did go…
