A cupboardful of love

The cupboard
Felt so alone
Abandoned in the corner
It had not one solitary friend
Close by were all manner
Of wonders
Shelves filled with beautiful glass
Pottery colourfully glazed
In the middle of the room
Regally stood a table
Highly polished and proud as punch!
It was surrounded by eight high back chairs
Plushly cushioned
Each night this table was laid
With a pristine starched cloth
Glistening stem ware
White plates ringed with gold
And oh so much silver
The family would enter
With terrines filled with all sorts of foods
Chatter and laughter bounced
Around the room
But not once did anyone
Even glance at the cupboard
Like a shrinking violet
It huddled in its corner
Sad beyond measure
Time passed
The family moved out
Renovators came
Oh the cupboard
Shook in its boots
Will it be broken too
But no one gave it a thought
So it was left to remain in its place
The room slowly changed
Pretty lace curtains
A tiny child’s bed
With a butterfly quilt
Drawers overflowing with trinkets
And oodles and oodles of toys
A little girl with long auburn hair
Entered the room
Tentatively she touched the things
Familiarising herself with the space
She sat down on the floor
Got out her favourite book
And began to draw
Night came on
She went then returned
Dressed now for bed
Her demeanour remarkably changed
Agitated she lay with the covers
Pulled tightly up to her chin
The house was old
It creaked and groaned
As the night turned cold.
The little one began to shake
She knew there were monsters
Under the bed
It seemed her toys had come to life
Dancing a gig to goad her dread
What could she do
Where could she hide
The curtains swished
The windows rattled
Without moving a muscle
She glanced over to the corner
It seemed a cupboard sat quietly crooning
Knowing she was no longer safe
With one bound she leapt
Ripped open the door
To enter a warm dark sanctuary
It smelt of lavender and rose
On its floor lay and old quilt
So soft
She lay down and curled into a ball
With it securely wrapped around her
Eventually the quaking stopped
It was though she was
Enveloped by her old Granny
Safe and secure
She fell into a deep sleep
Finally the cupboard had a purpose
It exuded joy and was so full of love for
This little one

Artist's Description

i woke with the first few lines already formed and it was from a dream that they came. however it was my dear friend Beth who gave me the initial impetus for this.
in my opinion everyone need a purpose and love in their life…
