Pinhole Camera

Sooooo…for a long time I’ve been wanting to try out and make my own pinhole camera and its only been until now with the recent inspiration journal on pinhole photography that I’ve given it a go.

I had to make a trip to tesco’s and thought I’d pick up some 35mm film whilst I was there…but it appears they didn’t seem to sell it (where I went anyway!), but they did sell a couple of cheapy tesco’s own disposable single-use cameras (along the lines of £1.94). So I thought I’d just take the films out of them….which I did pretty easily in the dark – although you do have to wind it back into the casing.

However…as I was taking the camera apart (and I do suggest the simple tesco’s own as another I picked up by fujifilm is impossible to take apart) I thought it would be kinda cool to make into my pinhole camera. So I removed all the unnecessary parts (if you try this, read the warnings of the flash and take the battery out to avoid a shock!)…and replaced the lens with a piece of aluminium from a beer can and pricked a pin hole in it and stuck it in place.

I covered up the inside where the flash was…just as a precaution – but left the nifty little viewfinder open (thinking it could be quite handy!). Then I needed a shutter as such to close off the pinhole…so I fiddled around for ages trying to find something appropriate and in the end just use some foam tape I had from back in my degree show….and it seems to work quite well…peels away easily and doesn’t appear to lose its stickiness!

Anyhow… me being me, I wanted to make my camera look cool..and decided I wanted to spray it all pretty and silver, so I sprayed the outer casing piece by piece.
Then I had to reload the film…which was kinda tricky in the pitch black – if you have a play with the camera…you’ll understand you have to wind it back onto the original side so as you take photos it winds into the casing. Then just to be sure…I taped up any slight gaps in the joins of the camera casing.

Now….I reeeeeeeeeeeeeally hope I manage some kind of decent photograph with my new little gadget…I’ll be sure to post any if they come out at all!!! Here goes!
