Martin McGloot and his Magic Boot

There was a man named Martin McGloot
who went to sea in a great Magic Boot,
he sailed and sailed all over the world
and met many a girl who was cute.

While Martin McGloot was lost at sea
he read books on naval history
and what he had found
was that many people had drowned
voyaging in vessels like he

But Martin did not worry
did not fret
for a vessel like his had
not been built yet
he was sure he would not fail
in rain,
hail or gale
so he felt no fear
nor did he ever grow pale

The ship was majestic
for a boot and Martin
resplendent in his embroidered suit
struck fear in the hearts
of the scourge dogs and their tarts
who wished to strip all his loot

He possessed cutlass and sextant
and everthing extant
including a compass to guide his roundabout trip
he had penknives and rifles and
all kinds of trifles
that couldn’t possibly fit on the ship

For the first two months
each day was an ordeal to wake from bed
and get dressed
for sickness took over when he thought of his dog
Rover which had caused all manner of distress

But on the eve of the sixty-fourth day
he spied some porpoises
all leaping his way
and as since he was young
he could speak in their tongue
they led him to Chesapeake Bay

When the Mayor of that town
found he was round
he called for a celebration
and pinned a medal
to Martin’s left breast

The Mayor in front of the crowd
yelled out very loud “For our brave explorer Martin”
and without a single pause
there was a round of applause
which was a nice additional bargain

Said the Mayor to McGloot
and he did not refute
there’s no greater explorer
than thee
you are the best

He returned to sea with a turbulent cheer
that rang for days in both of his ears
but being far from land
you’ll surely understand
he could not celebrate with a beer

The Boot never let Martin down
as he sailed the entire world round
from Cape Horn to Perth
for what it was worth
Martin McGloot was renown

He met pirates and kings
and all manner of things
that back home he’d find hard to explain
for they ’d think he was fibbing
to bolster his ego
or just simply insane

They would forgive him he guessed
for the medal pinned to his chest
proved him an honourable man
but he tired of sailing
all around the globe
once he was in Japan

But Martin grew lonely for a girl
he’d once loved back at home
though to her this fact
was not profound or exact
and would remain forever unknown
but he pined and pined till the nigh end of time
for she married and became Molly Malone
