Radio Flyer Afternoon

Sweltering sun filled summer afternoon
Air heavy and humid
Sweat carves tracks across dirty grinning faces
Blissful innocence and childhood timelessness
Adorned in torn jeans and grimy shirts
Our shadows stretch before us
Trudging ever upward with heads bowed
Eyes follow each worn and untied sneaker step
Labored breath and straining lungs
Wheels and muscles protest the climb
With every bump a tortured metal squeak
Heard to the top of our favorite blacktop hill
A scared and patched racetrack spread before us
Shimmering waves of heat dance above the super heated paving
With a giggle we mount the faithful steed
Our battle tested Radio Flyer ready
My dirty hands grip the wagon tongue
Dirty hands grip my shoulders
A push and we’re speeding atop blurred pavement
Flecks of paint jump and shudder
Our rusty red steed shaking and daring to upset
Every pebble and patched hole a close disaster
White knuckles and watering eyes
Faster and faster we careen downward
Parked cars indistinct colored shapes on either side
Adrenaline fueled yells cut the sleepy evening air
Ruined sneakers dart out to slow us
The smell of overheated soles surrounds
Exhilaration filled we slow
The world slowly comes back into focus
With that the journey ends
Once again we face the climb
With a childish laugh and shrug we start again
It’s what children do
It’s what children will always do………………………..
