Wallflower Dreams

Stiff new blue jeans and a collared shirt
A nervous grin cast to my friends standing near
Back uncomfortably pressed against the gym side
Sweaty palms buried deep in pockets
Downcast eyes trace each polished floorboard
The thick warm air filled with blaring sound
Mirror ball reflections chase across every wall
Embracing shadowy figures sway in concert
A tinge of envy in watching
Wishing just to have that chance
Foolish anxiety twists my stomach
It’s almost time to roll the dice
Courage summoned I break from my safe piece of wall
I force my leaden legs to move
Each step harder then the last
Praying to any god that will listen
I trudge across the ever growing gymnasium floor
Now committed with no turning back
Only too quickly the destination is reached
I steal a fleeting glance toward her
Sitting surrounded by a barrier giggling friends
Mouth suddenly dry I approach
I choke out my question
The rising girlish laughter an unpleasant buzz
I can see her weighing me in her eyes
Without a word she takes my hand
Dazedly led on to the dance floor
Clumsy movements only an afterthought
A defining moment never to be forgotten
My adolescent short lived triumph
With that the song ends and we part with barely a word
I saunter back to wallflower friends
Basking in their praise and envy
I take my place against the wall
Safe and hidden once again
My lingering smile hidden by the darkness………..
