Artist's Description

Last weekend I took my first trip to the High Peaks area of Peak District National Park. The Peak District is situated between Sheffield and Manchester and was one of the first places in Britain to be designated a National Park (in 1951). It’s actually said to be the second most-visited National Park in the world, largely because millions of people live in the former industrial cities surrounding it.

Anyway, this is Stanage Edge, which is an escarpment of gritstone near to the town of Hathersage. The Edge is famous for its climbing – apparently it was one of the places where the sport first took off in Britain – as well as its hiking and fell-running. Here I’m on the edge looking down at a few of the climbers making their ascents (as soon as they’re done they hop back down using one of the less sheer sections of the Edge and start again!).

More to come from the High Peaks – although I’ll try not to overdo it!
