Artist's Description

Like my other shot of the glacier on Mount Tronador, this isn’t technically my best. But, when something like this happens, there’s no time to change position, and you have to work with what you’ve got.

“Something like this” is exactly why the mountain is named ‘Thunderer’ in Spanish – and at the time it happened it sounded just like that: a sharp crack to begin, followed by a long, low rumbling that echoed down the valley just as the tens or hundreds of tons of ice that had been dislodged from the face powdered themselves into ice crystals as they tumbled down the slope. From a distance it looked like a brief, bright flow of water. Then it was gone.

It’s a reasonably common occurrence, but I still feel lucky to have been there at that particular moment.
