Artist's Description

An old one: a portrait of a cooperative Mute Swan (so named for their quietness) on the River Ouse where it flows through my home town – the small Buckinghamshire market town of Olney. You can tell it’s a Mute Swan by the black knob at the top of its beak.

As the well-known story goes, these swans are “Royal Birds” in England and Wales – meaning that they ‘belong’, in a loose sense, to the Crown and that killing them is prohibited without permission.
