Artist's Description

This large, female Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) was guarding her young owlet with the help of her mate. Fully one third bigger than the male, she makes a very capable protector. This species is widespread and common in Canada and they are formidable hunters. They have been known to take prey as large as Great Blue Herons.
