Artist's Description

A Jesuit Preist, Father Pierre Malliarid, published in 1738, 1823, & 1865 – Manual Heiroglyphique Mi’kmaq – based on the work of bishop Colin F.Mackinnon – 1604. “When the French arrived, Indians wrote on bark, trees and stone. Sent and received letters, sent circulars, advice, and directions in time of war.”
The heiroglyphic system was collected to be used to translate the Christian bible and assimilate the Mi’kmaq. In side by side Mi’kmaq and Egyptian heioglyphic systems Barry Fell of Harvard show common scripts.
