Artist's Description

I was driving home one late afternoon & saw our spiny friend digging into the embankment on the side of the road. On sneaking up to it to take its photo it either heard or sensed me & just dug a hole & thrust its spines up for protection & waited, as they do! I also waited, for ages, for its nose to come back up to see if it was safe to come out again. I’m glad it did.
The echidna or spiny ant eater is one of only two mammals in the world that lay eggs. The other is the platypus. Both native to Australia.
It is no relation to the northern hemispheres porcupine.
