Artist's Description

The Mark II infantry tank was a British light tank which saw service in France and North Africa. The heavily armoured tank (impervious to 37mm and 50mm German and Italian anti-tank guns) weighed 27 tonnes and was armed with a QF 2 40mm tank gun (93 armour piercing rounds) and 7.92mm Besa machine gun operated from a three man turret (crew of 4).

The 4th Australian Armoured Brigade also used the Matilda in New Guinea in 1945. In Borneo a squadron from the 2/9th Armoured Regiment operated 18 Matildas during the landing and capture of Tarakan.
