Zeke & Xavier

Sharon stared at the next nameless pace, one of the countless hundreds that moved in and out of her life interacting with her only through the checkout.
I can’t believe I’m still here I’m 39 for fuck’s sake She thought to herself, then thought about her three reasons for it all, her artist husband Mark and her twins sons Zeke and Xavier, She remembered her conversation with Mark about how their children would not become another two John Smith’s in the crowd.
She thought about Mark and couldn’t help but smile, the boys had gotten his black hair and her green eyes. Their ten year anniversary had been two weeks before, Mark had gotten her a pair of earrings that would have cost him most of what he had earnt over the month, she had smiled and his gentle face covered in stubble with big dark circles under his eyes trying to eke out a living as a barista and painting at night.
My boys. She thought to herself, and brought the image to her mind, the thirteen year old boys and the husband she had known for more then half her life and still loved so deeply.

She signed out of work that day and drove home in her corolla, which started on the first try miraculously, and drove home down the dingy streets, up the cracked driveway and into the cheap two bedroom flat.
She opened the door to Mark talking to a tall and striking pale man, with a messy shock of raven hair and drowning deep blue eyes, holding a cup of black coffee. The boys watched T.V obliviously in the lounge.
“Hey honey, this is Jeromé.” Mark introduced her to the tall man, she had a hunch as to what he was, now that it was legal, but wasn’t sure.
“Hello Jeromé, I didn’t see your car in the driveway.” She probed trying to be certain, it came in his response just from him opening his mouth.
“That, my sweet, is because I have not needed a car from a long time.” HIs smile flashed brilliantly white, and his voice ran up her spine like velvet. She swallowed her pulse and walked to her husband and clutched his hand.
“What can we do for you Jeromé?” She asked tired and not wanting an ancient being sitting in her kitchen playing with the flaking laminate on the table she had brought from ikea.
“You and your husband have done all I need of you, it’s the boys I am interested in.” Sharon opened her mouth in horror. “No, no, NO, you misunderstand my love, Not in the way you think. They have potential, master potential.” Sharon closed her mouth, she didn’t believe what she was hearing, a being wanted to train her children to be something she had been taught to fear as a girl. “They will never go hungry during their training, or after, they will be even more handsome…They will have money and so will you, they can live with you until they turn 18 where they can then choose whether they want to be changed or not if they choose yes I take them to Alaska for a year and on their return they are free to interact with you as much as they want, and above all they will not become another name in the woodwork they will go down in history.”
Sharon nodded and looked at her husband, who nodded to her also. “I would give you more time to decide but they must begin their neophyte training as soon as possible if they are to reach their full potential.”

“Honey they will live on in the minds of people forever and almost that long themselves, we can all be happy, he is the master of the city we can all live happily forever.” She grabbed his hand and thought about it.
“If the boys say yes…I guess they can train to be…” Jeromé looked at her and raised an eyebrow.
“It is okay my love, it is not a dirty word any longer.” He smiled reassuringly.
“Vampires.” She whispered under her breath knowing full well he heard her and her heart racing.”
